Petting zoo

COMPLETED, CULTURE, NEW BUILDING

The petting zoo was built on the occasion of the State Garden Show in Öhringen. The three elements - animal pen, aviary and fence - are strongly linked by their formal implementation and the larch material that sets the tone.

The formal design of the ensemble responds strongly to the urban context and the specific use. The exposed location in the southern part of the palace gardens in the immediate vicinity of the pond allows the two building volumes and the associated fence to be playfully mediated and creates changing visual relationships from all directions. In this way, the three elements appear very much as a whole, but are broken down and appear light.
The slatted façade of the aviary and barn reinforce this lively effect and lend the highly functional volumes a second level. The inviting character is tailored to the eye level of children and is intended to invite them to linger.
The facility was created as part of the 2016 State Garden Show and replaces the existing, very outdated enclosure in the castle garden. However, the construction and orientation of the buildings is planned for the time after the State Garden Show.

The species-appropriate keeping of the various animals was absolutely paramount and was agreed and implemented in advance with the veterinary office.
The use of larch wood is a result of this intensive exchange. It is very weather-resistant, but above all does not need to be treated. There is therefore no risk of poisoning for the animals. All joints are robust and solidly constructed so that the animal enclosure can continue the long tradition in the courtyard garden.
