4th Aachen Comprehensive School
Renovation and new construction of a school building and new construction of a 2-court sports hall to passive house standard
The 4th Aachen comprehensive school is located in the middle of a residential area. The two existing buildings - the “tower houses” - have been retained on the site. The new building placed between them not only completes the overall urban development concept, but also forms the functional link. The new sports hall is also deliberately placed in the sequence of buildings and supports the access route to the school complex.
The functional organization of the school is based on the special pedagogical concept of the 4th comprehensive school. Each of the two tower buildings houses rooms for teachers and classes on each of its two floors, which form so-called “teams”. The teams are differentiated from each other by differently colored rooms. At the heart of the teams are the team cuboids - large glazed rooms in which the teachers work, are available to the pupils at all times and offer them the greatest possible transparency.
Together with the open areas of the entrance forecourt and the canteen garden, a compact overall figure is created using a light-colored brick façade.
The new school building and double gymnasium were built in accordance with the “Aachen Standard” and in solid construction. The triple-glazed windows were designed as an aluminum mullion and transom construction. In addition, the roof surfaces were pre-equipped for the installation of photovoltaic systems.
With an annual heating requirement of less than 20 kWh/m2a, both buildings fall below EnEV 2016. The interiors of the existing buildings were completely refurbished.
