Werft 16
polis awards 2021 – GOLD
The architectural concept was to create a highly visible symbol of change for the New Work philosophy - while respecting the existing building.
WERFT 16, a modern and versatile office building, is located in the middle of an industrial environment close to the River Rhine. The building shines from afar, particularly due to its striking golden appearance.
The aim was to create a sustainable and attractive urban development in dialog with the existing building. The building from the early 1980s was largely preserved and rebuilt with minimal use of materials. The original curtain wall with aluminum panels was left in place and exposed from the inside, only the window panes were replaced.
The most striking feature of the building is the new storey, which was designed as an independent volume. The design language of the existing building was taken up and continued in terms of geometry and materiality. The effect of the new body was reinforced by a cantilever on the longitudinal façade. The striking round corners of the windows and the cubature are continued here.
The metal cladding and material concept provide a warm contrast to the cooler colors and materials of the existing building.
