New construction of the zoo terraces and a savannah facility
Duisburg Zoo is continuously implementing its master plan and preparing the construction of a new and supra-regional highlight: The new zoo terraces with adjoining savannah area are being built on Mülheimer Straße. Giraffes and other African animal species will live here in future. Demolition work will begin this year on the former zoo terraces from the 1970s, which have not been used by the zoo for a long time.
The construction of new large-scale facilities presents Duisburg Zoo with challenges, one of which is the available space. This is because the neighbouring freeway and the Kaiserberg limit the expansion of the zoo, meaning that the planned projects have to be realized on the existing site. The new zoo terraces with adjoining savannah area are being built on the same site where the old building is currently located. The planning area of the overall project covers around 11,000 m² and also includes the former giraffe enclosure and the current elephant area, including the stable building.
A modern multifunctional building with restaurants, event rooms and offices for the zoo administration as well as a parking level will be created.
The central element of the building will be the new restaurant, which will be open both during the day and in the evening. Spacious outdoor terraces adjoin the restaurant area. In future, African animal species, such as giraffes, can be observed from the adjacent terrace areas.
