Center for Visual Computing of Collectives

EDUCATION, LABORATORY, COMPLETED, NEW BUILDING, UNIVERSITY

With the construction of the new Center for Visual Computing of Collectives (VCC), a research center is being created at the University of Constance to investigate and decode swarm behavior and group dynamics in animal collectives.

The building, which is located on the north side of the university campus, brings together the Departments of Biology and Computer Science. An international team of experts in the fields of behavioral biology, computer graphics and data analysis are researching the collective behavior of animal groups such as swarms of fish and insects.

The heart of the building is located in the basement of the research center: a hangar extending over two floors and other rooms for animal husbandry, in which birds and insects are housed. Embedded in reactive holographic 3D environments, the movements of each animal are recorded in space and time and evaluated on a powerwall on the fifth floor, which is open to the public.
