12 sustainable primary schools Gütersloh
Twelve of the 17 municipal elementary schools were expanded by the start of the 2025/26 school year. Around 18,000 square meters of additional teaching and recreation space were created using modular construction. There was a choice between a catering module and a teaching module (cafeteria or educational space).
These two elements were combined and constructed individually as one-, two-, or three-story buildings at each of the twelve locations, depending on requirements. A new construction project began every four to six weeks. The first was the Nordhorn elementary school, where the symbolic groundbreaking ceremony took place at the beginning of June 2023, marking the start of the overall project.
Continuously rising student numbers, evolving educational needs and concepts, and the legal entitlement to all-day care in elementary schools from 2026 onwards have resulted in an increased need for space and floor area. The planning took place in close consultation with the respective schools; there was no one-size-fits-all concept imposed on everyone. Instead, the individual characteristics of each school were taken into account at every stage of the planning process.
The new buildings were carefully integrated into the respective school grounds by matching the outdoor facilities and the color scheme of the facades. The efficient and modular construction method allowed for a comparatively short construction period—while school operations continued as usual. Bright and friendly room atmospheres, as well as learning-supportive color concepts and state-of-the-art technical equipment with night cooling in summer and optimal use of daylight, solar heat gain, and external shading ensure flexible and efficient educational buildings and future-proof spaces for the students.
