Ground-breaking ceremony at the LWL Museum of Natural History
The symbolic ground-breaking ceremony for the extension of the LWL Museum of Natural History in Münster took place yesterday in bright sunshine in the presence of Kilian Kresing, the museum director Dr Kriegs and representatives of the LWL as the client.
After a world war bomb was found last week, the civil engineering work will continue from Monday.
The new extension will house a new conference building for scientific exchange: the ‘Forum of Natural Sciences’.
Both the museum and the planetarium will remain open during the construction work.
The preparatory work for the ‘Forum for Natural Sciences’ at the LWL Museum of Natural History in Münster came to an unexpected conclusion last week: during the laying of the sewers, a World War II bomb was found that had to be detonated. All preparatory measures have now been completed and representatives of the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (LWL) came together on Wednesday 19 February for the ground-breaking ceremony in front of the LWL Museum.
Since September 2024, the LWL has been developing the LWL Museum into a regional centre of excellence for voluntary and professional researchers (‘Forum for Natural Sciences’) for a total of 25 million euros. A new conference building is being constructed on the museum forecourt. Together with the exhibition building, the new building will form an attractive museum square. There will also be catering facilities.
The extension is scheduled to go into operation in mid-2027. The construction project also includes the remodelling of the exhibition space, where the new national exhibition will be shown from 2026, as well as the renovation of the administration.
